It’s been a long time coming but, after months of fundraising, we’re absolutely delighted to announce that we have opened a second caravan at Golden Sands Holiday Park in Mablethorpe!
This adds to the one we opened in March 2017 but is somewhat different as it’s fully adapted to cater for children with cancer who have extra mobility needs as a result of their treatment.
As you may already know, Sophie’s Journey was set up in memory of our daughter Sophie Robinson who passed away in January 2016, aged 12, after battling medulloblastoma – a cancerous tumour in her brain.
While Sophie was undergoing treatment, we were lucky enough to enjoy a holiday and create some special memories with Sophie away from a hospital environment.
This led us to open our first holiday caravan, to give families like ours going through a similar experience the same opportunity we had.
Our first caravan has proved very popular but, although it was always fully booked, unfortunately it isn’t suitable for children with extra mobility needs, which meant we were having to turn some families away.
This was of course heartbreaking for us, so we began fundraising for a second caravan that would be specially adapted.
Just over a year later and here we are: thanks to the generosity of our loyal supporters we surpassed our £50,000 target and have a brand new caravan which includes full wet room facilities and wheelchair access. We’ve also installed ceiling grab rails, and a mobile hoist can be hired on request.
It goes without saying that we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support and generosity of the public. As we rely on donations we’re continually grateful for any help to maintain both caravans and ensure our families have the best break possible.
We’ve contacted the people we weren’t previously able to cater for, and they’ve taken priority for the first bookings, and we can’t wait to welcome families to our new caravan.
If you or someone you know is supporting a child living with cancer, or has lost a child to cancer, and would like to apply for a holiday courtesy of Sophie’s Journey then we’d love to hear from you.
Both of our caravans are open throughout the season, which runs from March until October.
